To celebrate the anniversary of the Voting Rights Act of 1965, join host Atalaya Armstrong, Our Revolution Trenton Mercer Co-Chair Joe Marchica, Our Revolution New Jersey, and our event cosponsors for a virtual discussion on why voter suppression is such a major issue 56 years later. We'll review the state of our democracy and what voter suppression looks like in Trenton, across New Jersey, and at the federal level. RSVP here!
Speakers will include:
Larry Hamm, founder and chair of the People's Organization for Progress, and former US Senate candidate
Rutgers Professor Julia Sass Rubin, whose research shed light on one half of New Jersey's unique form of voter suppression, the County Ballot Line.
Henal Patel, who leads the New Jersey Institute of Social Justice's Democracy and Justice Program, and has a background in the other half of New Jersey voter suppression, gerrymandering and redistricting.
Co-sponsors include Our Revolution New Jersey, the Good Government Coalition of New Jersey, New Jersey Working Families, the People's Organization for Progress, Recovery is Essential, and Intersystemz.
Topics to be discussed include:
The historical significance of the Voting Rights Act, why voter suppression is so prevalent 56 years later, and an African American perspective on voter suppression in US history
Recent voting issues right here in Trenton and Mercer County
Voter Suppression in New Jersey: Gerrymandering and the Ballot Line
Voter Suppression elsewhere in the US
Once these topics have been explored, we will connect it back to how this all impacts you. We'll share how you can help us win on these issues, and be a part of fixing our democracy and society! Finally, we will have a Q&A panel section at the end, so bring your questions and share them to the Zoom Q&A feature. Hope to see you online tomorrow! Click here to register!
