19th_amendment_3.jpg

Meet us at Congressman Chris Smith’s Freehold office on Wednesday, August 29, 2018 to commemorate the valiant, sometimes brutal struggle to secure voting rights for women. 70 years of determined action – from marches and silent vigils in front of the White House to imprisonment, hunger strikes, force feedings and other horrors - culminated in the ratification of the 19th amendment to the U.S. Constitution on August 18, 1920.

Now, nearly 100 years later, and in the wake of Roe v Wade and the landmark decision on marriage equality, politicians like Chris Smith want to strip women, people of color and LGBTQ citizens of their rights, their voice, their votes, their access to reproductive health care, and in the case of pregnant women, even their status as people (that would be reserved for the fetus; women would become just a vessel or host, subject to prosecution for anything that might be construed as posing a danger to the health of the fetus).

Let’s remind Smith that this is NOT what we, his constituents, want! Bring signs! Plan to go up to the office and write Smith a message .(Bring your driver's license.)

>> WHEN: Wednesday, August 29th, 4:00 – 5:00 PM
>> WHAT: Hear how we fought and won voting rights for women and other critical rights and protections. And how to keep them! Speakers include Carol Watchler and Jen Fluharty.
>> WHERE: Congressman Smiths office, 112 Village Center Dr (Raintree Shopping Center), Freehold
