SafeZone is an educational program committed to increasing understanding and awareness around how to foster an inclusive and welcoming climate for the LGBTQ (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer and Questioning) community. This SafeZone workshop will consist of two sections. The first section is an introduction to the LGBTQ community including sexual and gender identities, data regarding LGBTQ individuals in higher education, history, symbols, genderism, gender neutral pronouns, and current events. The second section is focused on becoming an Ally and includes what an individual can do to support students, friends, and colleagues who may identify as LGBTQ, challenges that LGBTQ individuals may encounter, inclusive language, data, and how this information is applicable to you, your department, organization or day to day life. These workshops are open to all students, staff, faculty and community members.
