"Please come to the next County Freeholders Meeting on Tuesday, March 14 at 7pm at 4 Moore Road, Cape May Court House, NJ 08210 to show your support for the immigrant community and to speak out against collaboration between the County Sheriff's Office and Immigration!
Background:
Cape May County Sheriff's Office is on the verge of signing an agreement with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) under the 287-g program which would deputize several of the Corrections Officers in the County J*il as Federal Immigration Officials.
Universally, these programs (whether or not they only have deputized officials in the jails) have been shown to disproportionately impact immigrants with no criminal record and people accused of minor offenses only, and often works to deny people their right to due process. Any potential benefits are far outweighed by the increase in distrust of local law enforcement and fear of reporting crimes as victims or witnesses."
